Busiest Station and Often Gets Lost, Shinjuku is Now Renovating

Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, Japan, is the busiest station in the world today, with 12 train lines and 36 platforms. It is estimated that around 3.59 million people pass through this station every day, making getting lost at Shinjuku Station an annoying experience for many.

Shinjuku Station alone has more than 200 exits which even makes it difficult for local residents. For this reason, renovations were carried out to improve the layout of the station and make it more welcoming to passersby. Later, the new venue will include a walkway that will allow people to cut from the east side to the west side of the station without having to cross the ticket barrier again.

According to Timeout, the entire project is estimated to cost a hefty sum, 72.8 billion yen, and began on July 8, 2021, with the reconstruction of the west and east exits.

This Shinjuku Station renovation project, which covers an area of 10.1 hectares, will transform Shinjuku Station as we know it today. However, it seems that we have to be more patient considering that this project will not be ready until 2046, the completion of some renovations for the east and west exits is only set for 2035.

Meanwhile, Odakyu and Tokyu Land Corporation will begin construction of a joint urban development project in the same area in October 2022. The construction involves a new skyscraper near the west exit of Shinjuku Station, which is scheduled for completion in 2029.
